Couldn't agree more. I am more than happy to pay for music, I just don't want DRM and lately have no use for CDs (other than to rip once and put away).

Another good place to find DRM-free tunes is Amie Street. (http://amiestreet.com), or directly from the band's site like BNL (http://eric.danker.org/2006/10/25/new-bnl-album/).

@Anonymous: I'm sure there would be some legal wrangling, but they've worked out every dispute they've had with Apple Corps eventually and I'm sure some combination of threats and incentives could settle the issue.

@Eric: A fair point. I would want them to still allow other services to distribute the music as well. I don't think Apple should literally control the distribution angle. As a consumer, I'd much rather have my choice of places to buy music (and whether on subscription, per song, etc), so I would certainly not be happy about exclusive deals. I'm sure federal regulators wouldn't be happy either.

I wonder if Apple owned the music companies, would they allow other services (Urge, for instance) to distribute the music? I personally prefer subscription services because I can listen to as much music as I like for a flat fee. Lack of subscription keeps me off iTunes. Too bad.
