ORCL bids $6.66B for BEAS

2

Wow! Lots of talk about this for years and it’s finally happening. Apparently they offered $17/share (BEAS closed at $13.62 yesterday). BEAS is up around $18 on the news. Obviously, the $6.66B number indicates that Larry Ellison is the devil?

Carl Icahn has been buying up a healthy stake in BEAS (11% at last report) and very publicly advocating a sale to someone like Oracle or HP (another long-time rumored suitor). Alfred Chuang, CEO at BEA, has also very publicly said they’re not interested in being sold. Should be fun to see if that story changes.

Next: GOOG buys JAVA?

Yeah, this deal has been talked about for a few years. As for Oracle, this looks like a good fit for them. The negotiations seemed to have gone well (given the offer price) and the transition will also probably be fairly smoothe due to the corporate ties http://www.newsvisual.com/newsvisual/2007/10/oracle-and-bea.html#more . As for Carl Icahn, while many people despise him, I have to admit that he is a very efficient mananger and is well-known for improving management at the 30+ companies he is involved in http://www.newsvisual.com/newsvisual/2007/07/icahns-connecti.html , the majority of which are profitable.

  2. Yes..this is long rumoured deal. there is no doubt..no one else is more aggressive than Larry..
