St. Louis holiday concert
For those of you in St. Louis reading this blog, I’m a member of the Clayton Symphony Orchestra and we’ve got a fantastic holiday concert coming up this Sunday December 9th at 7 pm. The concert is at Clayton High School (the auditorium right in front) and tickets are $10 / adult, $5 / child.
As usual, we’ll be playing a selection of holiday favorites you know and love. We’re also doing some chamber music like one of the Bach Brandenburg concertos and a Vivaldi concerto for 2 trumpets.
In a more swinging vibe, renowned clarinetist Paul Wexler will be joining us to do Artie Shaw’s Concerto for Clarinet and he will blow your socks off! If you wanna check out Artie himself, here’s the clip of him doing it in the 1940 Fred Astaire movie Second Chorus.
Finally, local klezmer group Klezundheit (also featuring Paul) will be joining for us several pieces. I don’t know why, but I loves me some klezmer now and again.
In all, it’s going to be great concert and a great way to get in the holiday spirit, so check it out.

Hi! My name is Alex Miller and I live in St. Louis. I write code for a living and currently work for
What do you play? I played string bass in my high school orchestra, also electric bass on the side. I quit after high school, though. How do you have time to do it all?
I play viola (and a little piano and very very little guitar).
Really, I find if you take enough speed and Ho-Ho’s, you can eliminate the need to sleep, which frees up a lot of time.
Alas, I am going to the StL Symphony on Sunday afternoon, otherwise I’d consider it.
re: viola. Kick @ss! I love the string instruments. You may want to check out a French movie called Tous Les Matins du Monde that is set in the late 1600s and involves a master and student of the viol (not viola).
I vaguely remember a wonderful scene where the student runs through some arpeggios and the master shows him how “speed alone is not beauty”. An eerie echo to the time of the film’s release (1991) vis-a-vis virtuoso heavy metal.
