You may want to check out a French movie called Tous Les Matins du Monde that is set in the late 1600s and involves a master and student of the viol (not viola). I vaguely remember a wonderful scene where the student runs through some arpeggios and the master shows him how "speed alone is not beauty". An eerie echo to the time of the film's release (1991) vis-a-vis virtuoso heavy metal. Alas, I am going to the StL Symphony on Sunday afternoon, otherwise I’d consider it.
