Favorite Mac apps

8

Michael is finally joining the modern world and switching to Mac and invited people to submit their favorite / essential Mac apps.

Here’s my list:

  • Firefox – duh
  • Adium – chat
  • iTerm – terminal (Leopard’s version is usable but I like iTerm shortcuts and other features better
  • Mail – sufficient but wish it had a calendar other than iCal
  • TextMate $$ – text editor (not free, but worth it) – try TextWrangler for an ok free editor
  • Quicksilver – app launching and more
  • NeoOffice – very decent for word processing and office stuff
  • KeyNote $$ – must have for presentations
  • iStat – menu bar stats
  • Growl – system notification, integrates with many above
  • Colloquy – irc
  • NetNewsWire – rss
  • Audacity – audio editing
  • Audio Hijack $$ – swiping audio from any app
  • Senuti – move songs off your iPod onto a different computer (senuti == reverse(itunes))
  • ByteController – iTunes control from the menu bar, probably something better out there
  • coconutBattery – for those obsessed with battery performance
  • CoRD – a better Remote Desktop for Windows access
  • OmniGraffle $$ – drawing program, totally worth the cash, check out all the Omni apps
  • TinyAlarm – a wonderful tiny menu bar alarm clock
  • Zoom – a player for interactive fiction files like Zork :)

I quite like sizzlingkeys for itunes for controlling itunes

  2. Thanks Alex! This is very useful…. I’m looking forward to enjoying the 21st century

  3. I’ve been using Alarm Clock 2, also free, because it has snooze times adjustable when you snooze, itunes, attractive pop-ups, and so on. You might give it a try.

I like iPulse a lot for a compact display of system stats. Ditto on the Omni apps. I use OmniFocus every day for TODO management. I also like Harvest for time tracking.

  5. Bill Shirley says:

I will second: iStat, Growl, OmniGraffle.

    I will add:
Flickr Uploadr – put up your pics on flickr.com
Transmit $ – ftp more easily
    MarsEdit $ – better blogging
    iTunes – for podcast receiving
TwitterPod – until something better comes along for twitter.com

I really need to get: Audio Hijack.

  6. James says:

    Torrents: Transmission.

NewsFire just appeared, TextWrangler, Amaya web standards editing, Adobe Reader, and VirtualBox (I use it to run Java 6 on Ubuntu Linux )

Java 6 will be, if they ever finish it…
