Music Club – August 2008

4

It’s time again for my monthly music club mix. This month is a bit of indulgent power pop and just a smattering of stuff I’ve been digging on lately.

Song Artist Album Comments
HFXNSHC Sloan Never Hear the End of It A perfect pop-punk song from this popular Canadian group (who are almost unknown in the US). HFXNSHC = Halifx, Nova Scotia Hardcore :)
Capital H Motion City Soundtrack I Am The Movie Nothing deep, just some power pop
Dance, Dance Fall Out Boy From Under the Cork Tree and some more
Lying Is The Most Fun A Girl Can Have Without Taking Her Clothes Off Panic! at the Disco A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out and a little more
Girlshapedlovedrug Gomez How We Operate Can’t stop listening to this album lately
Good Arms vs. Bad Arms Frightened Rabbit The Midnight Organ Fight Another great album I can’t stop listening to
Start A War The National Boxer A favorite from last year
He Came to Meet Me Hem Funnel Cloud A quiet gem
All I Am Is All You’re Not Sloan Parallel Play Another from the latest Sloan album
Hey Julie Fountains of Wayne Welcome Interstate Managers Just a great pop tune
Amsterdam Guster Keep It Together
Mr. Mastodon Farm Cake Motorcade of Generosity A great old classic Cake tune. Went to Mastodon State Park a couple weekends ago and couldn’t get this out of my head.

Definitely my favorite listens in the last month have been Gomez, Frightened Rabbit, and Sloan. All pretty different but that’s made for a good trio to bounce between.

birds fall from the window ledge above mine. then they flap their wings at the last second.

but also: gomez is the greatest, but I really don’t care for that album. my favorite is “in our gun” by a mile!

and hem-wise, I think “rabbit songs” is outstanding but I haven’t heard much else… yet!

  2. PeeWee says:

I think I’m getting old because I don’t know any of the artists in your list… :D

  3. Alex says:

@kb – thanks, I’ll check that stuff out

@PeeWee – maybe you should start a music club! :)

  4. This is from last year, but I just found out about it. I’ve really been enjoying the CD from “St. Vincent”. The best tracks are “Now, Now” and “Marry Me”, but I like the whole CD. Check it out! Our musical tastes my differ though.
